Dear JEA Members and Select Members of the Non-Contracted Staff,
It has been brought to our attention that there are a couple concerns regarding the individual contract that was issued to you on April 10, 2013. The purpose of this letter is to clarify the Board’s and the Administration’s intent regarding the interpretation and application of the terms of the individual contract in order to alleviate these concerns.
First, the salary in the contract states that it is to be determined by collective bargaining. To clarify, this means that the Board does not have the authority to unilaterally determine base wages for its teaching staff members; base wages must be negotiated with the Janesville Education Association (JEA). However, it is the Board’s intent not to decrease your 2012-2013 contract salary.
Second, the liquidated damages provision in the contract provides that teachers will not pay any liquidated damages if they resign by July 10, 2013. The Board and Administration specifically lengthened the timeline this year to provide teachers with additional time to consider and resign from their 2013-2014 contracts without any liquidated damages. The Board intends to accept any resignations that it receives by July 10, 2013. Therefore, even if you sign and return your individual contract by April 17, 2013, as requested, you still retain the ability to resign and be released from your 2013-2014 contract without any liquidated damages if your resignation is received by July 10, 2013.
