Franklin Middle School/Rock River Charter School - What's next?

I just finished my last focus group tonight with elementary parents from Adams, Madison and Washington Elementary Schools. I have been able to listen to many voices over the last several weeks along with collecting data on the cost of renovation at FMS, enrollment numbers at both schools and the pros and cons of this decision.

My recommendation won’t come to the Board for several weeks and I still have some data to review, however, I heard loud and clearly from parents that they want something different for Franklin’s future. They discussed creative, innovative ideas to draw more students of the same age into FMS. They spoke of a STEM (science, technical education and math) magnet or charter school. They were excited by the possibilities. We decided we are going to continue to meet together and dream big for the west side of Janesville.

  1. My understanding from attending a focus group was that Rock River Charter School has a waiting list and potential for growth that would be limited by placing the school at Franklin Middle School. With declining elementary enrollment has the district or board considered drawing new elementary school boundaries and having the Rock River Charter School take over one of the elementary schools thus enabling Rock River Charter to increase their enrollment?
